The Time of Lady Fāṭimah’s Martyrdom and the Location of Her Grave
It has been narrated that Lady Fāṭimah al-Zahrā (ʿa) attained martyrdom either on the 13th of Jumādā al-Awwal or the 3rd of Jumādā al-Ākhirah, in the 11th year after Hijrah. She lived for only ninety-five days after the passing of her noble father, the Holy Prophet (pbuh).
Imām ʿAlī (ʿa), personally undertook the sacred duty of washing her blessed body. According to reports, Asmāʾ bint ʿUmays assisted him in this task. Asmāʾ said: “Fāṭimah (ʿa) had willed that none should wash her except ʿAlī (ʿa) and myself. Thus, we washed her together. Then, the Commander of the Faithful performed the funeral prayer over her, accompanied by Imām al-Ḥasan (ʿa), Imām al-Ḥusayn (ʿa), ʿAmmār ibn Yāsir, al-Miqdād, ʿAqīl, al-Zubayr, Abū Dharr, Salmān, Buraydah, and a few men from Banū Hāshim. They offered the prayer for her at night, and in accordance with her will, Imām ʿAlī (ʿa) buried her in secret.”
There is considerable disagreement among scholars and traditionists regarding the exact site of her grave. Some of our scholars maintain that she was buried in al-Baqīʿ; others have said that her resting place is her own chamber, which later became part of the Prophet’s Mosque when it was expanded by the Umayyads. Another opinion holds that she was buried between the Prophet’s grave and his pulpit, in reference to the saying of the Prophet (pbuh): “Between my grave and my pulpit lies a garden from among the gardens of Paradise.”
The first view appears less probable, while the latter two are closer to the truth. Therefore, those who wish to observe Iḥtiyāṭ (caution) in their Ziyārah of her grave should perform it at all three locations.
السّلامُ عَلَيْكِ يَا مُمْتَحَنَةُ اِمْتَحَنَكِ الّذِي خَلَقَكِ فَوَجَدَكِ لِمَا امْتَحَنَكِ صَابِرَةً
Peace be on you, o the carefully examined, tried and measured by Him who created you, and found you, in your test, cool and patient.
أَنَا لَكِ مُصَدّقٌ صَابِرٌ عَلَى مَا أَتَى بِهِ أَبُوكِ وَوَصِيّهُ صَلَوَاتُ اللّهِ عَلَيْهِمَا
I believe in you; and I bear patiently all that which has been conveyed by your father and his successor. May Allah’s Blessings be on them.
وَأَنَا أَسْأَلُكِ إِنْ كُنْتُ صَدّقْتُكِ إِلا أَلْحَقْتِنِي بِتَصْدِيقِي لَهُمَا لِتُسَرّ نَفْسِي
I beseech you, if I have borne testimony to your trueness, to bind me together with my testimony to both of them, in order to give joy and satisfaction to my heart and soul.
فَاشْهَدِي أَنّي ظَاهِرٌ بِوَلايَتِكِ وَوِلايَةِ آلِ بَيْتِكِ صَلَوَاتُ اللّهِ عَلَيْهِمْ أَجْمَعِينَ
So bear witness that truly I, by heart, am totally loyal to you and to your children's leadership. Blessings of Allah be on them all.
