Ziyārat Arbaʿīn by Jābir ibn ʿAbdullāh al-Anṣārī

Ziyārah of Jābir ibn ʿAbdullāh al-Anṣārī on the day of Arbaʿīn

Ṭabarī, with his chain of transmission, narrates from ʿAṭiyyah ʿAwfī, who said: I went out with Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Anṣārī with the intention of visiting the grave of Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib. When we reached Karbalāʾ, Jābir approached the bank of the Furāt (Euphrates), performed ghusl, and put on a ridāʾ and an izār (similar to one in a state of iḥrām). Then he opened a pouch that contained saʿd (a type of fragrant herb) and applied it to his body, perfuming himself with it. With every step he took, he mentioned Allāh, the Exalted, until he reached the sacred grave. When he arrived, he said: “Place my hand on the grave.” I did so, and he threw himself upon the grave and fell unconscious. So I sprinkled water on him until he regained consciousness. He called out three times, “Oh Ḥusayn!” Then he said: “Does the friend not respond to the friend?!

Then he answered himself: “How could you respond, when your blood-soaked veins are visible above your shoulders and separation has occurred between your body and your blessed head?! I bear witness that you are the son of the Khātam al-Nabiyyīn (Seal of the Prophets), the son of the master of the believers, the son of the one who partnered in piety, the offspring of guidance, the fifth among the Aṣḥāb al-Kisāʾ, the son of the master of the purified ones, and the son of the leader of all women. And how could you not be so, when the hand of the master of messengers fed you, and you were raised in the lap of the righteous, nursed from the hands of īmān, and quenched with Islām. So your life was pure and your death beautiful. But the hearts of the believers are grieved by your separation, and there is no doubt about your position. So peace of Allāh and His pleasure be upon you. And I bear witness that you departed from this world just as your brother Yaḥyā ibn Zakarīyyā departed and attained the grace of martyrdom.”

Then he looked around the sacred grave of Sayyid al-Shuhadāʾ (ʿa) and said: “Peace be upon you, O souls who sacrificed themselves for Ḥusayn (ʿa). I bear witness that you established ṣalāh, gave zakāh, enjoined good and forbade evil, and strove against the mulḥidīn (heretics), and worshipped Allāh until certainty (yaqīn) came to you. By the One Who sent Muḥammad (ṣ) with truth and prophethood, we are partners with you in what you entered into and in what you acted upon.”

ʿAṭiyyah says: I said to Jābir: “How can we be partners with them in reward, while we neither descended into the valley nor ascended a mountain, nor struck with swords, but they are the ones whose heads have been separated from their bodies, their children orphaned, and their wives widowed?!

Jābir replied: “O ʿAṭiyyah! I heard my beloved, the Messenger of Allāh (ṣ), say: ‘Whoever loves a people will be resurrected with them, and whoever is pleased with the deed of a people is a partner with them in that deed.’ By the One Who sent Muḥammad (ṣ) as a prophet, my intention and the intention of my companions is upon what Imām Ḥusayn (ʿa) and his companions were upon.

Then he said: “Take my hand and lead me toward the houses of Kūfah.”

On the way, Jābir said: “O ʿAṭiyyah! Do you want me to advise you? For I do not think I shall meet you again after this journey. O ʿAṭiyyah! Love the one who loves the Āl Muḥammad, as long as he loves them. And hate the one who hates the Āl Muḥammad, as long as he harbors hatred for them — even if he fasts by day and stands in prayer by night. And show kindness and gentleness toward the lover of the Āl Muḥammad, for if one of their feet slips due to excessive sins, the other foot shall remain firm because of their love. Indeed, the lovers of the Āl Muḥammad will return to Jannah, and their enemies will return to the Fire.”

I bear witness that you established the prayer,

And gave the zakat,

And enjoined what is right,

And forbade what is wrong,

And honored your parents,

And fought your enemy.

I bear witness that you hear the words,

And respond to the greetings,

And you are the beloved and friend of Allah,

And His chosen one and the son of His chosen one,

I visited you out of longing,

So be my intercessor with Allah.

O my master,

I seek intercession with Allah through your grandfather, the master of the prophets,

And your father, the master of the successors,

And your mother, Fāṭimah, the mistress of the women of the worlds,

May Allah curse those who killed you and wronged you,

And those who hated and envied you from the first to the last.

Then he leaned over the grave and rubbed his face against it and prayed four rak'ahs,

then he came to the grave of ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn(a), and said:

Peace be upon you, O my master and son of my master,

May Allah curse those who killed you,

And may Allah curse those who wronged you,

I seek closeness to Allah through my love for you,

And disassociate myself from your enemies before Allah.

Then he kissed it and prayed two rak'ahs, and turned to the graves of the martyrs, and said:

Peace be upon the souls who are at the grave of Abī ʿAbdillāh al-Ḥusayn,

Peace be upon you, O followers of Allah and followers of His Messenger,

And followers of the Commander of the Faithful,

And followers of al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn,

Peace be upon you, O pure ones,

Peace be upon you, O guided ones,

Peace be upon you, O righteous ones,

Peace be upon you and upon the angels of Allah surrounding your graves,

May Allah gather me and you in His mercy under His throne.

Then he came to the grave of al-ʿAbbās, son of the Commander of the Faithful(a), stood by it and said:

Peace be upon you, O father of al-Qāsim,

Peace be upon you, O ʿAbbās, son of ʿAlī,

Peace be upon you, O son of the Commander of the Faithful,

I bear witness that you exceeded in giving advice,

And fulfilled the trust,

And fought your enemy and the enemy of your brother,

So blessings of Allah be upon your pure soul,

And may Allah reward you with the best of rewards from a brother.

Then he prayed two rak'ahs, supplicated to Allah, and left.
