History of the Ahmad al-Hasan Cult

History of the Ahmad al-Hasan Cult

One of the newest Mahdi related movements of the contemporary era is that of Ahmed al-Hasan. Originally from Basra (Iraq),[1] his real name is Ahmed ibn Ismael ibn Saleh al-Hambooshi. He was born in 1968 in the town of Mudayna located on the outskirts of Basra (Iraq).

Introduction of Ahmad Basri

He claims that he is the fifth generation of Imam Mahdi[2] and that this was revealed to him in a dream. Not only this, he has made many other claims that cannot be verified and have no basis in Islamic scripture. The following are some of the most important of these claims:

Claims

·       Being God[3]

·       Being a Prophet[4]

·       Being an Imam[5]

·       Being a Wasi (heir) of the Prophet[6]

·       Being the Yamani[7]

·       Being Imam Mahdi’s Son and Ambassador[8]

·       Being Prophet David’s Armor[9]

·       He was crucified instead of Jesus[10]

·       A rock in Imam Ali’s hands[11]

Biography of Ahmed al-Hasan

He attended school and university like all youth of his time and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. He then studied for a short  time at the seminary in Najaf.[12] He is also very hostile towards those that oppose him and has legislated hostile and takfiri laws against them. These include:

·       Announcing that Shia Muslims that oppose him are infidels, enemies of the Ahl al-Bayt, and najis (impure)[13]

·       Allowing his followers to confiscate the belongings of those that oppose him[14]

·       Insulting the Imams and Prophets and claiming that Imam Husayn is a Mushrik[15]

Ahmed al-Hasan’s enmity with Shia scholars

He also shows great enmity towards Islamic scholars and clergies and insults them in all manners possible. For example, he refers to those scholars that do not believe in him as the American Scholars and claims that Ayatullah Sistani believes in the ruling of Satan.[16] Based on these extremist beliefs Ahmed al-Hasan revolted against the scholars of Iraq and the Iraqi government in 2008. The revolt turned into a massive failure in which hundreds of people were killed from both sides and prominent followers of Ahmed al-Hasan including Sayyid Hasan al-Hamami testified on television that the Ahmed al-Hasan cult was deviated. After this event a great internal strife occurred within the ranks of this cult and the cult split into four sects. Each of these sects curses and speaks against the others and claims that they are the true followers of Ahmed themselves.
