Some Hadiths about Imam Mahdi & Prophet Jesus

1.Prophet Muhammad says: “Mahdi is from my descendants; when he appears, Jesus, the son of Mary, will descend to support him; then Jesus will place the Mahdi before himself and will pray behind him.”

Al-Amālī, by Sheikh al-Ṣadūq, p. 287, Hadith no. 4

2. The Commander of the Faithful (‘a) said in a sermon (khutbah): “…Then the Mahdi (‘atfs) will appoint Hadrat ‘Isa (‘a) as his representative in the offensive operations against ad-Dajjal (the Anti-Christ). ‘Isa (‘a) will set out to capture and suppress ad-Dajjal.

Ad-Dajjal who will then be controlling the entire world, destroying agriculture and human generation, will call the people toward him and anyone who accepts him will be treated with favor and anyone who refuses to accept him would be killed. He will travel throughout the world, with the exception of Mecca, Medina and Bayt al-Muqaddas (Jerusalem), and all the illegitimate children from both the east and the west of the globe will rally around him.

“Ad-Dajjal will set out toward the Hijaz and ‘Isa (‘a) will intercept him at the passage of Harsha. ‘Isa (‘a) will direct a horrible shout at him and strike him a decisive blow. Ad-Dajjal will melt in a blazing fire like lead melting in fire.”

Ash-Shi‘ah wa’r-Raj‘ah, vol. 1, p. 167

3. The Apostle of Allah said, “How can a community perish when I am at the beginning of it, Jesus the son of Mary will be at the end of it and al-Mahdi will be in the middle of it.”
Dala’il al-Imamah, 234

4. It is narrated from Ibne Abbas that the Messenger of Allah (a.s) said, “My Caliphs and successors are twelve persons, first of whom is my brother and the last my great grandson.” He was asked, “O Allah’s Messenger! Who is your brother?” He replied, “Ali bin Abi Talib.” He was asked, “Who is your great grandson?” He replied, “Mahdi, who shall fill the earth with justice and equity like it would be fraught with injustice and oppression. By the One in Whose hands is my life! Even if a day remains for the earth, the Almighty Allah will prolong this day till my son, Mahdi reappears and Isa bin Maryam descends to the earth and recites prayer behind His Eminence. The earth shall be illuminated from the east to the west.

Fara’id al-Simtayn. p. 43

5. In the book, Ghayah al-Maram, the Noble Prophet (S) is reported to have said: “During the advent of Hadrat al-Qa’im (‘atfs), Hadrat ‘Isa (‘a) will descend and collect the books from Antioch. God will lift the veil covering the face of “(And) Iram, (the city) of the pillars”15 for him and make manifest the palace that Hadrat Sulayman (Prophet Solomon) (‘a) built before his death.

He will gather together the properties of the palace and divide them among Muslims, and he will take out the ark which had been thrown into the Caspian Sea by the order of God to Aramya (Jeremiah).

“Whatever has been left for posterity by the family of Musa (Moses) and Harun (Aaron) (‘a) exists in that ark. Also in the same ark are the tablets (where the Ten Commandments were inscribed); the staff of Musa; the cloak of Harun; the ten types of foods that used to descend to the Children of Israel; and the roasted chickens preserved by the Children of Israel for their future generations. Then cities will be conquered with the help of the ark just as they have done before him.”

Ghayah al-Maram, p. 697; Hilyah al-Abrar, vol. 2, p. 620; Ash-Shi‘ah wa’r-Raj‘ah, vol. 1, p. 136. See Ibn Tawus, Malahim, p. 66; Ithbat al-Hudah, vol. 3, pp. 489, 541.

With only a slight variation, Yanabi‘ al-Mawaddah attributes the same thing to Hadrat al-Mahdi (‘atfs), stating: “Hadrat al-Mahdi (‘atfs) will take out books from a cave in the land of Antioch and he will take out the Zabur of Dawud (‘a) (Psalms of David) from the Caspian Sea. The relics of the family of Musa and Harun (‘a) exist in that book and the angels will carry it on their shoulders, and the tablets and staff of Musa are there as well.”

Yanabi‘ al-Mawaddah, p. 401. It is also recorded in Ibn Hammad, Fitan, p. 98; Muttaqi Hindi, Burhan, p. 157; Ibn Tawus, Malahim, p. 67.

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The three nations are all expecting an awaited one who will emerge at the end of time, for he is promised in each religion. The Muslims are awaiting the descent of the Messiah Jesus son of Mary from heaven, to break the cross, kill the pigs and kill his enemies among the Jews and those among the Christians who worship him. And they are awaiting the emergence of the Mahdi, who will be one of the descendants of the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him); he will fill the earth with justice as it was filled with injustice."(Ighathat al-Lahfan  2/338).

Al-Bukhari (2222) and Muslim (155) narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “By the One in Whose hand is my soul, soon the Son of Maryam will descend among you as a just ruler, he will break the cross, kill the pigs and abolish the jizyah, and wealth will become so abundant that no one will accept it.”

In the hadith of Jaabir ibn ‘Abdillah (may Allah be pleased with him), it says: The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: Jesus son of Mary will come down, and their leader the Mahdi will say: ‘Come and lead us in prayer.’ But he will say: ‘No; their leader should be from among them,’ by way of Allah honouring this ummah.”

Narrated by al-Harith ibn Abi Usamah in his Musnad. Ibn al-Qayyim said in al-Manar al-Munif (1/147): Its isnad is jayyid (good).

The origin of this hadith appears in Sahih Muslim without naming the leader, as it says: “… Then ‘Isa ibn Maryam (peace be upon him) will descend and their leader will say: ‘Come and lead us in prayer.’ But he will say: ‘No; their leader should be from among them,’ by way of Allah honouring this ummah.” Narrated by Muslim (225).

In Sahih Muslim (2937), after mention of the tribulation of the Dajjal, it says: “Then whilst he is like that, Allah will send the Messiah son of Maryam, who will descend to the white minaret in the east of Damascus, wearing two garments lightly perfumed with saffron, placing his hands on the wings of two angels. When he lowers his head drops of water will come quickly from it and when he raises it, slow drops like pearls will fall. Every disbeliever whom his breath reaches will die, and his breath will reach as far as he can see. He will pursue him [the Dajjal] until he catches up with him at the gate of Ludd (Lod), and kills him. Then some people whom Allah has protected will come to ‘Isa ibn Maryam, and he will wipe their faces and inform them of their ranks in Paradise. Whilst they are like that, Allah will reveal to ‘Isa: I have brought forth some slaves of Mine against whom no one will be able to fight; take My slaves to safety in at-Toor [Sinai]. And Allah will send Ya’juj and Ma’juj, who will swarm down from every slope. The first of them will pass by the Lake of Tiberias and will drink what is in it, and the last of them will pass it and say: There was once water here. Then the Prophet of Allah ‘Isa and his companions will be besieged until the head of the bull of one of them will be better than one hundred dinars for one of you today. The Prophet of Allah ‘Isa and his companions will beseech [Allah], and Allah will send worms in their necks, and they will all perish as one in the morning. Then the Prophet of Allah ‘Isa and his companions will come down to the earth and they will not find a spot the size of a handspan on earth that is not filled with their putrefaction and stench. The Prophet of Allah ‘Isa (A) and his companions will beseech Allah, and Allah will send birds like the necks of Bactrian camels which will carry them and throw them wherever Allah wills. Then Allah will send rain which will not be kept out by any house of clay or hair; it will wash the earth and leave it like a mirror. Then it will be said to the earth: Bring forth your fruits and restore your blessing. On that day a group of people will eat from a pomegranate and shelter beneath its skin. Milk will be blessed until a milch-camel will be sufficient for a multitude of people, and a milch-cow will be sufficient for a tribe of people, and a milch-sheep will be sufficient for a clan of people. Then whilst they are like that, Allah will send a pleasant wind which will cause them pain beneath their armpits and will take the soul of every believer and every Muslim. The evilest of people will be left and they will fornicate like donkeys, and upon them the Hour will come.”
